Made to Order Shop

The nature of a handmade item is that each one is different and unique. You may order something from an image in the gallery and you will receive something very similar, but not an exact copy. I will be very clear with you on what I can and can not recreate.

Time Frame: Est. 4-6 weeks turn around, may vary for large sets over 12 pieces
Process: (why it takes so long)
Clay begins as a moist malleable material that I shape into the item you request either on the potters wheel or by hand building. Building time varies. It takes 1-3 days to dry to a sturdy leather hard stage where I am able to trim or finish its form. Finishing may consist of attaching a handle, fitting a lid or trimming a foot on the bottom. It takes another 7-10 days to reach the bone dry stage. At this time it is extremely fragile. In order to become strong enough to handle for glazing and decoration, it will go through a first firing called a bisque firing. The firing will take 6-7 hours to reach around 1700 degrees and will cool slowly for the following 12-24 hours. During this firing, the clay undergoes an irreversible molecular transformation and becomes ceramic. (Up until the firing, the clay can be rehydrated, recycled and reworked into something new.) After the firing, the material can no longer change shape…unless broken :( The bisque firing also leaves the surface of the piece semi-porous and ideal for absorbing glaze. After glazing, it will go through a second firing, appropriately called the glaze firing, where the kiln will take about 8 hours to reach around 22oo degrees F and will slowly cool over the next 12-24 hours. This final level of heat will allow the clay to reach maturity and achieve maximum strength. It will also melt the glaze both adhering it to the pot and melting the surface to the point of vitrification, meaning it is no longer water permeable and therefor can be deemed food safe. All of the glazes I use are food safe unless otherwise noted.
If you added it up, it sounds like it should take around 2 weeks turn around time - but the thing is I am not making only one piece at a time - I need to make enough work to fill the ENTIRE kiln before I fire it. That can take a while longer and depends on other orders and time of year.
